This presentation discusses how national identity has been and is being addressed in Cura§ao. How do people in Cura§ao construct national identities in daily life? How is a national collective constructed on the one hand, and how are differences with other collectivities constructed on the other hand? I will first look at the historical context of constitutional changes that have occurred over the years. I will then examine the present discourse on constitutional reform and whether and how identity is addressed in this discourse. Finally, I will seek to place these constitutional and identity issues within a wider Caribbean context. My purpose is not to provide conclusive answers, but to contribute to discussion in an area that has great potential for further analysis.
